RESPONSES OF NOCTUID TYMPANAL ORGANS (NOCTUIDAE: AMPHIPYRA PERFLUA) TO THE IMPULSE ULTRASOUND SIGNALS

Comparative investigation of noctuid tympanal organs responses to a single and paired impulse signals have been performed. The discharge of receptor A1 as a response to a single acoustic impulse consists of up to four spikes; the latent time of response decreases while the amplitude of impulse increases and it is getting longer when the stimulus is more then 10 dB above the threshold. When impulses are paired with the interval of 0.15-1 ms the receptor sensibility increases for at least 3 dB. The time resolution of tympanal organ is 4-5 ms. These results are considered in the sight of the noctuid echolocational orientation.
